The 5 Bathymetric Oceanic Zones of Krillion

Krillion’s environment mirrors the real physical oceanography of planet Earth. As your cumulative depth grows, your telemetry interface physically transitions through all 5 bathymetric layers.

1. Sunlight Zone / Epipelagic (0m - 200m)

The uppermost layer of the world ocean. 100% of visible sunlight penetrates here, allowing photosynthesis to power massive phytoplankton blooms.

Creatures: Plankton, sardines, flying fish, coral reefs, sea turtles, dolphins.

Physics: Temperatures range from 20°C to 24°C; pressure ranges from 1 to 20 atmospheres.

2. Twilight Zone / Mesopelagic (200m - 1,000m)

Only faint, scattered blue wavelengths penetrate this dim realm. Photosynthesis is impossible, and animals rely on vertical diurnal migration and bioluminescence.

Creatures: Lanternfish, comb jellies, hatchetfish, glass squid, barreleye fish.

Physics: Temperatures drop steeply through the thermocline to 4°C; pressure reaches up to 100 atm.

3. Midnight Zone / Bathypelagic (1,000m - 4,000m)

Perpetual blackness. The only light produced originates from biochemical luciferin reactions in living organisms (photophores).

Creatures: Giant squid, sperm whales, anglerfish, gulper eels, vampire squid.

Physics: Constant temperature of 2°C to 4°C; pressure ranges from 100 to 400 atmospheres.

4. Abyssal Zone / Abyssopelagic (4,000m - 6,000m)

The vast, flat oceanic plains covering over 60% of Earth’s surface. Water is near-freezing and food falls only as sparse "marine snow".

Creatures: Dumbo octopus, tripod fish, abyssal sea cucumbers, giant isopods, faceless cusk-eels.

Physics: Freezing 1°C to 2°C; pressure exceeds 400 to 600 atmospheres.

5. Hadal Trenches / Hadopelagic (6,000m - 11,034m)

The deepest V-shaped tectonic chasms on Earth, located primarily in the western Pacific (Mariana, Tonga, Kermadec, and Philippine Trenches).

Creatures: Mariana snailfish (Pseudoliparis swirei), amphipods (Hirondellea gigas), giant single-celled xenophyophores.

Physics: Bone-crushing pressures exceeding 1,100 atmospheres (equivalent to the weight of an elephant balanced on a postage stamp).

Did You Know?

The Hadal zone was named after Hades, ancient Greek god of the underworld. Reaching 6,000m+ in Krillion awards you the Hadal Trench Explorer rank.
